An extract from a leading Salmon fly reel specialist:

Most certainly the highly complex manufacturing process of a basically 19th century handmade product is decisive for the way most modern vom Hofe style s-handle reels look today. Or, I could say, this process is prohibitive for manufacturers to produce really beautiful and desirable reels, that every angler longs for to own and fish. The enormous investment of time-consuming handwork in the making of a true vom Hofe inspired fly reel results in a calculation, which is almost impossible to materialize today.

This might serve as a convincing argument against advanced "high end" reelmaking, but,- bear in mind,- first and for all it is a challenge of motivation, enthusiasm, imagination and knowledge and, of course, the indispensable skills of the craft.
